Prime Minister David Cameron says the horror siege in Sydney by a lone wolf attacker could just was easily happen in UK
Yes, a Lone Wolf attacker really can pop-up at any time, any place and come from anywhere. If only there were a way of predicting what sort of person he or she might be. But, you know, the thing about the Lone Wolf is that he or she works alone and has entirely individual motives that are impossible to conceive. Wouldn’t it be so much easier to prevent attacks if the Lone Wolf was a part of a recognisable group or ideology? If he or she was not, in fact, a Lone Wolf but part of a pack. If there were lots of them you could see them coming and act accordingly. [Sarcasm end]
And of course it could happen in the UK – the big clue here is that it already has, a few times (if by ‘it’ we mean ‘non-Muslim murdered by Muslim’). Or does Mr Cameron mean something exactly the same could happen, right down to the Lindt chocolate counter and the Australian accents? If he does then he’s getting into strange Charlie Kaufman territory. Is he planning to build a replica of Sydney?

From later in the Telegraph article:
“The problem facing the intelligence services is that a lone individual who may be self-radicalised and plans to attack using basic, household weapons leaves little if no trail for officers to pick up on.
‘Self-radicalised’? I guess the radicalisation came upon the poor guy in a dream or he was walking down the road one day and he thought to himself ‘hey, you know what? I think I should drape myself in the black flag of Islam -for no particular reason – and go grab some hostages’. What is this ‘self’ that does the raidcalising then? Is it the Cartesian ego? Or some homunculus sitting in the brain-stem whispering radical messages to the inner-ear? A little bat-mite than happens to be unerringly familiar with Koranic verse.
This is all very troubling, what with the idea that anyone can be a Lone Wolf and the notion of self-radicalisation we should all be on our guard. It could happen to you! At any moment! Your own brain, unprompted, could convince you to drape yourself in the black flag of Islam and go on a spree.
Don’t worry – I’m being sarcastic again. There was no Lone Wolf, there was a Muslim. He wasn’t self-radicalised, he was a Muslim. And, if radicalisaion happened, it happened when he started taking the Koran seriously (i.e being Muslim).
