In a revelation that surprises precisely no-one, The Guardian today reports on a totally-not-racist incident involving an advert specifying ‘no white people’ and helpfully quotes plenty of statements from right-thinking students explaining that the totally-not-racist incident is, like, totally not racist. For reasons.
A group of black California college students requested that they only live with people of color in a Facebook post that has since gone viral and sparked a national debate about racism and safe spaces at US universities.
“It’s a legitimate request,” said Josue Pasillas, a 21-year-old senior and president of the student senate at Pitzer College. “Students of color should have the right to create spaces where they feel comfortable on campus and off campus. It’s all about living in solidarity with others without the judgment and racism that they face on a daily basis.”
“People should have the opportunity to live with those who they feel safe and comfortable with,” he said. “We shouldn’t be making a big fuss about what they need to do to take care of themselves.”
Here at Dumb Times we are Freedom of Association absolutists and so we agree with The Guardian and all the right-thinking students they received statements from: it is, of course, perfectly okay for people to specify the people with whom they want to live and ‘have spaces they feel comfortable on campus and off campus.’ Perhaps the cult of diversity is finally coming to an end.
We look forward to reporting on the success and happiness of the now perfectly acceptable segregated student residential buildings which are, surely, now a requirement of University life. We hope too that white students, safely living in their whites-only student accommodation will feel safe from black crime, as black students in their blacks-only accommodation will feel safe from the horrors of racism. And we hope the one guy living alone in the Eskimo building doesn’t get too lonely.
Dumb Times can also announce, now that such things are acceptable, that Dumb Times is proudly a ‘No Irish, No Blacks, No Dogs’ organization. Such people (and dogs) make the editor terribly uncomfortable.
