The New York Times Tells Us How Horrid France Is To Poor Muslims:
PARIS — Whether Mohamed Lahouaiej Bouhlel, who killed more than 80 people during Bastille Day celebrations in Nice, was an agent of the Islamic State or an unhinged loner who borrowed the group’s jihadist symbols…
Rule one is always disassociate the murderers from the religion.
The slaughter raises the same fundamental question: Why do so many more attacks of this magnitude occur in France than in other European countries?
Shall we have a wild guess that maybe, just maybe, it’s something to do with having one of the largest Muslim populations in Europe?
Belgium has also been hit recently, but less often. In Britain and Spain no terrorist attack has killed more than 10 people in over a decade.
So attacks by Muslims are no big deal! Don’t worry about it! A few more murdered Europeans doesn’t mean anything. Importing more Muslims, that’s the important thing. Says Farhad Khosrokhavar.
In Germany, there hasn’t been a major attack at all.
Unless you count mass sexual assault. Which we don’t. Obviously. (Also, this.)
Young people in the banlieues, marginalized and with few prospects, feel like victims. They become prime targets for jihadist propaganda, often after a stint in prison for petty crimes.
Don’t suggest for a second that any of that marginalization or limited prospects has anything to do with their own behaviour. That’s racist. And don’t mention genes. That’s super-mega-racist.
Neither Germany nor Britain faces the banlieues phenomenon, at least not on such a scale.
Maybe they don’t have enough Muslims yet? Keep on importing, that’s what they have to do.
But France seems to alienate many more of its citizens and residents, well beyond those who actually join the Islamic State.
Bad France, naughty France! How dare you turn perfectly innocent and lovely Muslims into mass murderers!
One reason is that France’s vision of citizenship, which strongly insists on adherence to a few exalted political values, has seriously eroded over time. By the 1980s, the republican ideal was floundering:
It’s almost as if those who lack the qualities and abilities to live in accordance with the precepts of civilization, don’t. And the greater the proportion of the population they make up, the less civilized the country will be. But that’s just me being racist again.
It had promised equal opportunity, and that now seemed to be in short supply.
Equal opportunity ≠ Equal outcome
Certainly, Britons and Germans also express fears about immigration and Islam. Such concerns help explain Brexit. Acts of sexual harassment in Cologne around the new year, apparently committed by immigrants.
Although France has managed to integrate many immigrants and their descendants, those it has left on the sidelines are more embittered than their British or German peers, and many feel insulted in their Muslim or Arab identity.
‘It’ left ‘them’ on the side lines. They were there waiting and ready and full of enthusiasm! But bad old France just sort of trotted by. It left them on the side lines!
Hey, here’s an idea! Why don’t those who care so much about their Muslim or Arab identity just, y’know, go live in a Muslim or Arab country? Or does that make too much sense?
France’s staunch version of secularism, is so inflexible it can appear to rob them of dignity.
Don’t you just hate it when your abstract, unquantifiable thingamajig is stolen by a nation state’s vague, abstract unquantifiable thingamajig? I do! I remember when Japanese politeness stole my sense of rhythm. Well, it ‘appeared’ to steal it.
France’s model of integration is generous in its principles but too rigid in its practice. The realities of French society today call for a more pragmatic and flexible approach, with fewer ideological diktats and less anxiety about plurality. France isn’t what it used to be, and it’s time it came to terms with that idea.
Let’s just fill the place with Muslims already. And let them do whatever the hell they want. That’ll sort it out.
Farhad Khosrokhavar is a Muslim in France who thinks this is a great idea.
